Graduate Studies at the Department of ECE
The mission of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is to motivate and inspire our students by providing high-caliber, fully integrated programs in electrical and computer engineering in order to provide leadership in a rapidly evolving global information society in the service of humanity and to advance the state of knowledge in our disciplines by actively pursuing scholarly research for publication and dissemination.
With a faculty that boasts seven Fellows of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), $2.8 million in annual research funding, and access to state-of-the-art labs at the National Institutes of Health, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and NASA, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is making significant contributions to a number of critically important challenges.
Using remote sensing satellites to gather data that can help provide more accurate crop yield and weather pattern predictions, we conduct research with applications to global food production. We create sensors that are designed to detect gases and other toxic agents in the atmosphere, which has applications for both homeland security and environmental monitoring. And we invent. Our most recent invention is a glove that can translate American Sign Language into the spoken and written word, helping spread communication for the deaf community.
